Your Guide to the Best Horseback Riding in Colorado 

1. Winding River Resort at Rocky Mountain National Park 

Known as one of the most scenic locations in the United States, Rocky Mountain National Park is home to several excellent trails for horseback riding in Colorado. Winding River Resort, located in Grand Lake, CO, offers one or two-hour trail rides from Memorial Day weekend through the end of September.  

2. Sombrero Stables at Snow Mountain Ranch 

Sombrero Stables at Snow Mountain Ranch offers incredible horseback riding trails through the beautiful Colorado landscape. Whether you’re a novice or an expert rider, the staff at this stable will lead you along several trail rides.  

Each day at 8:00 a.m., you can embark on a Breakfast Ride, which also includes a delicious cowboy-style breakfast halfway through the three- to four-hour ride, for $60 per person. Reservations are required for the Breakfast Rides, so be sure to call ahead.  

You can also opt for one of the Steak Dinner Rides, which include a journey through the forest to a campfire clearing where dinner is cooked to order. Take in the beautiful mountain views, look for wildlife like deer and elk, and enjoy the company of your fellow riders. This excursion is priced at $70 per person. 

3. Cabin Creek Stables at Devil’s Thumb Ranch 

Cabin Creek Stables at Devil’s Thumb Ranch offers rides that last from an hour-and-a-half to a half-day excursion. After your ride, you can take some time to explore the extensive ranch with zipline tours, a restaurant, mountain biking trails, and more. 

4. Rusty Spurr Ranch 

You can ride through the same landscape the Ute Native Americans traversed more than a century ago at Rusty Spurr Ranch in Kremmling, CO. From sagebrush high-desert to forest-covered ridges, you’ll explore various terrain during your excursion. Select between train rides, lunch or dinner rides, cattle drives, or customized rides.
