Byers Peak Wilderness covers over 8,900 acres of Colorado landscape. Situated in the much larger Arapaho National Forest, Byer’s Peak stands at a towering 12,804 feet tall and can be easily be seen from nearby towns like Winter Park. Byers Peak Wilderness was named after William N. Byers, who founded Rocky Mountain News, Colorado’s first newspaper.
Byers Peak Trail
This trail is very popular and measures just over nine miles long. The trail is rated “Hard,” so come prepared and know your personal limits! Hikers will climb nearly 3,000 feet on the way. However, the view from the top is incredible and well worth the hike. Enjoy a stunning view of Byers Peak Wilderness and the Arapaho National Forest!
Keyser Creek Trail
If you’re coming from the western side of the peak, take Keyser Creek trail to the summit. While this trail is much shorter (5.8 miles from the trailhead to the summit), it is more scenic.
Byers Peak is the highest peak in the Byers Peak Wilderness, According to the USDA Forest Service, the area is home to two glacial lakes, and plenty of wildlife species including elk, bear, and moose. Campsites are available at the Byers Creek Campground.
